Once the homeland of the indigenous Payaya Indians, and then the capital of Tejas (under both Spain and Mexican rule), San Antonio—in one form or another—has been around for quite a long time, indeed (although it was officially founded in 1718). Although it’s often overshadowed by other Texan cities like Dallas and Austin, San Antonio has its own distinct history and personality (not to mention traditions) that are begging to be explored.
As one of the largest cities in the United States, you can bet that you’ll find a few things in town to keep you busy while you’re here. Check out their burgeoning craft beer and winemaking scene, or kick back in one of the classy coffee shops, the Japanese tea garden, or a museum to get out of the sun. Or, why not soak up the sun!? Try your hand at stand up paddle boarding, head to one of the parks, or maybe just kick it at a beer garden and counteract the sun with some fresh suds—and there’s always the riverwalk, too! When you’re all done, check out some of the amazing food San Antonio serves up; from contemporary cuisine to European small plates, and (of course) Texas BBQ, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to dining options.
