Overview

Oakland is a vibrant cultural hub that prides itself on its art, music, creativity, and diversity. Every pocket of Oakland, from Chinatown to Jack London Square, is unique and special in its own way. Temescal is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, but recently has experienced a revival, packed full of quaint shops and contemporary restaurants. If you’re looking for something a bit quieter, drive up Grizzly Peak Boulevard to Tilden Regional Park to enjoy gorgeous views of the city or a lovely hike or picnic.

Oakland’s food scene is based around the delectable local produce, which can be found at a handful of farmers’ markets around town. Local establishments serve up contemporary cuisine as well as cuisines from all around the world. In particular, be sure to check out Oakland's Chinatown for some incredible dim sum, roast duck, and other regional Chinese delicacies. However, the city’s pride and joy lies in its art. Check out Oakland's First Friday's, an art and performance event that is free to the public and celebrates Oakland's never ending creativity. Known for its deep West Coast roots in jazz, blues, and funk, Oakland has also produced some of the greatest hip-hop music to ever grace planet Earth. Mac Dre, Too Short, and E-40 are just a few of the Oakland, Bay Area artists that are responsible for putting Oakland on the hip hop map.

While many may be a bit wary of Oakland and its notorious reputation, it has become one of the most exciting and intriguing destinations on the West Coast with so much to offer. So head on down to the Bay, and see what Oakland’s got going on — the vibrant culture might just make you feel like staying for a while.
