This museum offers a select collection of early and contemporary California paintings, photography and Asian art. It actually has two locations, with its main galleries in a three-story landmark building on Pacific Street across from The Colton Hall. The second, an expanded and remodeled stone adobe building from the Mexican period of Monterey's history, located in La Mirada, not only features galleries of its collections but revolving exhibitions. Be sure to take the time to visit their wonderful rose garden.
If your travel plans allow you to spend a few days in the Monterey area, The Monterey Museum of Art has a program of classes and workshops for children held on many Saturdays. Group tours of their Pacific Street building are available; sign up on their web site.
