Take a wrong turn on Molokai on the way to the beach to find the nearly abandoned city of Maunaloa. Even though it looks like fairly new, as if it's just closed for the night, it is boarded up and quiet, with very few residents remaining.
Once upon a time, the luxurious Maunaloa Ranch was the biggest employer in Molokai. Almost everyone in the city was an employee at the resort, which had ambitious plans for expansion. When it closed down, the town was no longer sustainable, and most of the population left to look for work. All that remains now is a lovely little kite shop.
