The Rise of a Pioneer

This small, private recording studio was a daring project when it first opened in 1950. Sam Phillips was a trailblazer in the new and subversive forms of modern music. Local legend has it that this location recorded for the very first rock and roll single in 1951 with composer Ike Turner on the keyboards.

The studio has since welcomed famous artists from a variety of genres. Some of their more well-known clients include Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, and Jerry Lee Lewis. The building itself is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is still a functioning studio and popular attraction.
