Want to soak up some of the best views on Maui, an island with no shortage of great vistas? Then lace up those hiking boots and head up the windward slopes of the West Maui Mountains on the Waihe'e Ridge Trail. Five miles round-trip, this path climbs some 1,500 feet through verdant thickets and forests to a 2,563-foot turnaround point.
In clear weather, the scenery is stop-you-in-your-tracks good: Sightlines can extent to Haleakala and well out to sea, while nearer at hand are the gorgeous canyons of Waihee Gorge and Makamakaole Gulch (which includes the tall, tiered plunge of Makamakaole Falls). But hey: Even a viewshed of clouds is pretty darn stirring up here.
