The Pipiwai Trail offers one of the nicest hikes in Haleakala National Park, not least because it's the only public access to the Kipahula Valley, otherwise closed to entry as a biological reserve. After you've braved the hubbub around the Seven Sacred Pools, the Pipiwai offers a quieter adventure up 'Ohe'o Gulch and beyond.
You'll pass through verdant tropical forest (an elephantine banyan tree among the inhabitants) and a regal bamboo grove en route to the big finish awaiting you two miles from the trailhead: Waimoku Falls, horsetailing down a 400-foot-tall cliff whose misty base makes your journey's turnaround point.
