Slambang of a Finish

The Pipiwai Trail offers one of the nicest hikes in Haleakala National Park, not least because it's the only public access to the Kipahula Valley, otherwise closed to entry as a biological reserve. After you've braved the hubbub around the Seven Sacred Pools, the Pipiwai offers a quieter adventure up 'Ohe'o Gulch and beyond.

You'll pass through verdant tropical forest (an elephantine banyan tree among the inhabitants) and a regal bamboo grove en route to the big finish awaiting you two miles from the trailhead: Waimoku Falls, horsetailing down a 400-foot-tall cliff whose misty base makes your journey's turnaround point. A stunning scene, to put it mildly.
