As with any great college campus, California State University Long Beach (CSULB) has plenty of appeal for non-students. Tour its expansive grounds, and you'll get to eyeball more than a few impressive landmarks--none better known than the Walter Pyramid, that Ancient Egypt-style arena hosting 49ers b-ball and volleyball. Then there's the excellent University Art Museum, ranked among the very best museums in the Golden State by the California Arts Council; it includes an outdoor sculpture garden.
And speaking of gardens, the campus also hosts the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden, a splendid lake-anchored haven. As its founder Loraine Miller Collins wrote about the site: "When a person is tired, or anxious, or in a quest of beauty, may they enter and come forth refreshed to meet the problems of the day."
