Long Beach plays host to the annual Washington State International Kite Festival, a weeklong event that starts on the third Monday in August. If anyone in Long Beach knows kites, it's Ron Welty, who opened Wind World Kite Shop in 1978. Ron knows everything there is to know about kites, and he won't let you leave his shop with the wrong model. He'll ask you all the right questions (including how much you're looking to spend) and set you up with the exact right kite for you, whether it's a $5 job made in China and wrapped in a cellophane sleeve or a 15-foot wide pterosaur kite that'll set you back almost $300. If you're just stopping in to browse, that's okay too, and you'll leave with a whole new appreciation for the fascinating world of kite flying.
