Safe Passage

Situated at the mouth of the Columbia River, the North Head Lighthouse has great views of this dangerous body of water, providing a true sense of its awesome nature. You'll also be able to view the Long Beach Peninsula, Pacific Ocean, and bits of the Oregon coast from here. Although the beacon is now automated, a trip to the lighthouse is still exciting. The photographic opportunities are amazing, particularly on a clear day. For a look into the area's history of protecting ships traveling on the Columbia River, you might want to consider taking a tour of its lantern room.

Utrip Tips

*Children must be 7 years old to climb the tower

*Keep your eyes peeled for whales—especially if you're in town December through early February

*You'll need a Discover Pass to park here; there is a pay station at the North Head Lighthouse parking lot, or you can purchase one at the Ranger Station in Cape Disappointment State Park
