Marie Powell retired from a 19-year teaching career in 1989 and promptly turned her attention from math, science, and technology to art. But you can see the influences of these subjects in her pieces, which are lush and layered mixed media paintings, collages, printmaking monotypes, pastels, and oils. Her high-contrast, vividly colorful, and often playfully geometrical abstract paintings are full of movement and emotion, while her floral and coastal paintings are only slightly less abstract but entirely unique in their content and vision.
