A Timeless Beacon

The Cape Disappointment Lighthouse is an historic attraction that will delight people of all ages. Completed in 1856, the lighthouse was the first one built in the Pacific Northwest. The lighthouse is perched on a dramatic outcropping of land near the mouth of the Columbia River as it enters the Pacific. In spite of the light, many ships did not survive the treacherous coast and the area is loaded with sunken ships. Visitors to the lighthouse can take photographs and explore the grounds. While the automated light has been deactivated, the lighthouse is still used by the coastguards to take observations.
