Only about a half-hour drive from Vegas is the Valley of Fire State Park with its spectacular rock formations, mysterious ancient pictographs and scattered striped rainbow rocks. It's an intriguing and special landscape so it's not surprising that it's the oldest state park in Nevada, dedicated in 1935.
There are quite a few trails, but the drive through the park can be enjoyed on its own with a stunning vista round every turn. It's very hot so bring plenty of drinking water and the entrance fee of $10.00.
Try to time your visit to see the sun go down on Fire Canyon, a sight you won't forget.
