A tragic love story surrounds this stretch of coastline where Puu Pehe, or Sweetheart Rock, is located. An ancient legend tells the story of a local warrior who captured a beautiful princess from Maui, and he was so taken with her beauty that he hid her in a cave by the sea.
A storm came, and before he could rescue her, she drowned. After building a tomb for her on the top of the rock, his grief drove him to throw himself to his death and join her in eternity. Follow a walking trail from Hulopoe Beach Park to find Puu Pehe. It is surrounded by chaotic waters and the sides are slick and steep, thus it's recommended that you view it only from a distance.
