Local legends say that the rocky moonscape was the result of a battle between two powerful priests, one from Molokai and the other from Lanai. The priest from Lanai burned so much vegetation in his fervor that rocks and sand were all that was left. The ideal time to visit is at sunset when the fading light changes the tall red rocks orange and purple.
