Carson Valley's Backstory

This absorbing historic site marks the first permanent Euro-American settlement in Nevada: the Mormon Station trading post, established in 1851 by John Reese and Stephen Kinsey to serve pioneers passing through the Carson Valley along the California Trail.

Exploring the shady spread of Mormon Station today, you can tour the museum inside a replica of the trading post to learn more about the emigrants, the California Gold Rush, the Pony Express, the early days of the town of Genoa, and the land's original inhabitants, the Washo Indians. The park also hosts regular events, including lots of history programs, and makes a fine picnicking destination to boot.
