If you're looking for some winter activity away from the tourist-centric core of South Lake Tahoe, check out Hope Valley Outdoors. You'll find snowshoeing, cross- and backcountry-skiing, friendly guided tours, lessons and equipment rental less than half an hour from the city.
In addition to the usual winter activities, you can rent a fat-bike. If you've never ridden one, picture a mountain bike beefed up with tires almost 4" thick, capable of going where no other bike can - through the snow! After working up a sweat, relax in the Yurt (a large, round, insulated tent) for an extremely reasonable, pay-what-you-can price.
There's no phone, internet or cellular service available - and that's part of the appeal.
