A Private Little War

Many historic sites and heritage buildings still stand from that tense period when brother fought brother during the Civil War. Fort East Martello is part of the triumvirate of heritage sites curated by the Key West Art and Historical Society, which also includes the Lighthouse and Keepers Quarters and the Custom House. The fort was never finished, as the violence that was expected to erupt between the Union forces that kept the island part of the US and the local residents sympathetic to the Confederacy never materialized. The fort was re-discovered in the 1950s, and restored to its original 1840s era design.
