African-American Heritage Trail is a microcosm of specials sites and landmarks that commemorate the people and achievements of regional and state African American residents. The heritage project is still open to development and sites can apply to be part of the trail. Celebrated sites that visitors to Jacksonville can visit include the Clara White Mission, which was founded by a former slave and remained in operation for a century, and the famed Ritz Theatre and Museum. The theatre was known as the "Harlem of the South" and played an important role in the city's development and entertainment. Each site on the tour will provide visitors with a unique view of how African Americans helped shape the city's development.
