Surf with the Locals

Makaha is a beautiful beach to swim, snorkel and surf but be aware that it's more suited to experienced people and safest in the summer. During winter you have to be especially aware of high seas and a strong rip tide. Thankfully there are lifeguards to consult about conditions if there's any doubt, and always check the condition signs.

This beach is a local surfing hotspot but if you want to swim, be beware of the sharp reef close to the surface in the northern end: the middle section is the best place to go in for a swim. As this beach is quite popular with the locals, it's at its busiest on the weekends. Even if you're not exactly a surf legend like Kelly Slater it's still a thrill to sit back, soak up some sun and watch the locals shred the waves.
