Helena's Start

In 1864, a group of miners who became known (for reasons that aren't entirely clear) as the Four Georgians discovered gold in Last Change Gulch and threw up a few claims: the founding roots of Helena. Many sites from the early days of the "Queen City of the Rockies" can be seen on a self-guided walking tour of Last Chance Gulch downtown; the 1886-built Colwell Building, for instance, overlies the spot where the Four Georgians struck paydirt. Also here in the historic district called Reeder's Alley stand some of the original miner cabins and rowhouses, including Helena's oldest remaining home: the Pioneer Cabin, built that first year of settlement.
