Northern Rockies in the Raw

The Helena is one of the most varied national forests in Montana, split as it is between several sections in the city of Helena's vast hinterland. From the Elkhorns to the Big Belts to the Gates of the Mountains, this nearly-million-acre wildland includes wetter forests on the windward side of the Continental Divide and sunny grasslands and ponderosa parklands to the east. The frontcountry's accessible and popular, but there's a lot of remote outback on the Helena, including the grizzly-ruled Scapegoat Wilderness in the northwest, part of the huge Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex--one of the biggest roadless areas in the Lower 48.
