Taking a guided cruise through the Gates of the Mountains on the Missouri River--roughly midway between Yellowstone and Glacier national parks--provides an adventure in geology AND history. The geology comes courtesy of soaring pale walls of Madison limestone: the mighty cliffs that in 1805 so awed Meriwether Lewis, who gave them their apt name. Besides reflecting on that Corps of Discovery history, you can also see the lingering results of 1949's Mann Gulch Fire, a ferocious inferno that killed 13 firefighters. You've got a good chance of seeing critters, too, from bald eagles to bighorn sheep.
