The Wild West spirit lives on in Flagstaff. Its humble beginnings as a logging and ranching town, and railroad depot, have long marked it as a important player in the region, and the eventual addition of Northern Arizona University in the mid-20th century cemented its cultural legacy. Although the town itself features everything a traveler could want including an international food selection, arts, live music, and history, Flagstaff's surroundings make it a must-see.
From downtown, the Grand Canyon is an hour and a half drive, along with several other National Parks, National Monuments, and National Forests. If you feel so inclined, you can even hike or bike right out of town on the Flagstaff Urban Trail System (or F.U.T.S). Unlike most of Arizona, Flagstaff features at least four distinct seasons including significant snowfall, making it a year-round destination - from snow sports up at Snowbowl to swimming holes, like Oak Creek, perfect for beating the summer heat. It might be tempting to pass straight through the city on your way to Sedona, Wupatki National Monument, or the Mt. Humphrey's Peak Trail, but if you stop, you'll be greeted with a smile and a funky and fun little college mountain town unlike any other.
