Climbing North Peak, a 3,557-foot summit to Mount Diablo's near northeast, is a tough undertaking: more than 10 miles negotiating steep switchbacks and exposed single-tracks as it bags not one but two mountaintops. The other one's Mount Olympia, whose hard-earned summit feels wilder than North Peak (with its towers) or Mount Diablo (which is roaded).
To rewards you reap for those searing calves and all that fountaining sweat are some of the Bay Area's most impressive vistas--certainly comparable to the top-of-the-world scenery Mount Diablo delivers.
