Among the most rewarding hikes in Mount Diablo State Park doesn't even play out on the slopes of the namesake mountain. Looping around Eagle Peak from the Mitchell Canyon trailhead introduces you to the Diablo Range's incredibly diverse ecology and geology while providing a nice midrange workout. You can make a roughly eight-mile adventure via the Mitchell Canyon Trail, Meridian Ridge Road, Eagle Peak Trail, and Mitchell Rock Trail.
The deep riparian woods of Mitchell Canyon, craggy outcrops, fragrant chaparral, riotous wildflower blooms: The foreground scenery's beautiful enough, and then there's the backdrop of golden foothills, deep-cut canyons, and looming peaks (including Mount Diablo itself). It all adds up to a semi-challenging but utterly-worth-it day in the Bay Area hills!
