Not far from Juniper Campground, partway up the Summit Road winding up Mount Diablo's western slopes, the Diablo Valley Overlook provides an unforgettable view westward toward the Pacific. On a clear day, you can see San Francisco landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge and Mount Tamalpais from this vantage 2,900 feet up the hills. Of course, the vista's even better from the Mount Diablo summit--particularly given the viewshed east of the peak--but the Diablo Valley Overlook will certainly whet your appetite. And it's one heck of a place to watch the sunset.
You can also access the absorbing and scenery-rich "Trail Through Time," a geologically focused 6-mile hike, from the overlook.
