Set apart from many of its contemporary universities, Northwestern has the distinction of being one of the premier private research institutions. Located on a large campus about 12 miles north of Chicago, in Evanston, Illinois, the school is noted for the quality of its undergraduates and its graduate programs. It is a beautiful campus, with a strong network of libraries, museums and research centers. The university also has satellite campuses in Chicago and Qatar.
If you go to visit Northwestern University and you happen to be on campus at 9:00 pm on the Sunday before the term's final exams, be prepared to experience "The Scream" -- there is a tradition for all students to lean out of their dormitory windows or gather courtyards to give vent to the pressure of upcoming tests. Of course, Northwestern is a charter member of the Big Ten Conference (its only private institution) and has strong athletic teams, so they can scream about that, too.
