There is a reason that surgeons are held in such high regard: They save lives in ways that, to most of us, seem almost miraculous. This museum, a division of the International College of Surgeons (ICS) devotes more than 10,000 square feet of public galleries to exhibitions that explain the science, history and even the art of medicine, particularly surgery. In addition to their permanent displays, the curators provide special exhibitions on a wide range of subjects, from surgical nursing to polio and ophthalmology.
Enjoy the galleries on your own or, if you'd like, group tours are available (but you must register at least 14 days in advance). The guides will provide a special dimension to your experience. If you know a surgeon - especially if you owe one your life - the gift shop offers an opportunity to provide a special present for the person in your life who once held the healing scalpel.
