On the Shore of the Inland Seas

Right at the nexus of the shore of Lake Michigan and the center of the nation's railroad system, Chicago has been blessed with the perfect position to become one of the greatest ports in the world. This small (but well-managed) museum documents the history, culture and importance of Chicago's maritime heritage. Exhibitions include photographs and art of Great Lakes shipping, actual Native American canoes, ships' models, anchors and other shipping artifacts.

There are also occasional special exhibitions (did you ever hear of the "Christmas tree ships" that brought evergreens every December to Chicago from the vast forests of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan?) and a lecture series. They sponsor several regattas on the lake every year and have summer musical performances.
