Education with Eclectic Architecture

Since 1852, this moderately sized university has been a leader in research and higher education, teaching students from around the world. Tours of the campus are offered twice a week from March through September. The university has a main campus in Medford and two other campuses in Chinatown and Grafton as well as one in the French Alps.

The original campus sits high on Walnut Hill with the earliest buildings of the university in the academic quad. Ballou Hall, one of the first buildings, was designed in the Italianate style by well-known Boston architect Gridley James Fox Bryant. More modern buildings sit uphill in the residential quad. The uphill and downhill portions of the campus are connected by the memorial stairs, designed by the Olmsted Brothers in 1920.
