Billings Backdrop

Denver has the Colorado Front Range, Seattle Mount Rainier--and Billings has the Rimrocks. Not soaring mountains, no, but a lovely golden scarp, dotted with ponderosas and smoldering at sundown. The sandstone "Rims," product of an eons-old interior seaway and river erosion, are more than just a pretty backdrop: They're also an easy-to-reach outdoor destination for city-dwellers. Hikers, bikers, and rock climbers have a Rimrocks heyday at Zimmerman Park, while some of the best vistas can be had at the Four Dances Natural Area, named for a Crow chief said to have come here for vision quests.
