It all began just over a century ago with a single painting. Today, there are more than 95,000 paintings curated here, and over 1000 of them are works by the renowned Henri Matisse. This is the largest public collection of his art in the world, and that's just the beginning of what there is to see at this vast gallery.
Visitors can peruse halls and rooms filled with American, Chinese, African, and European artwork, including sculpture, textiles, ceramics, and decorative pieces. New and established artists are represented in various installations. The historic building that houses all of these wonders dates from the 1920s and the grounds include two landscaped sculpture gardens.
