Also referred to as Plaza Island, this verdant city square in the heart of downtown Ashland is a favorite hangout for visitors and local working folks alike. There are actually three sculptures within the square that are part of the Ashland Downtown Historic District.
European settlers first arrived in this region in 1852, and many of the features in the square commemorate that historic event. The most notable of these is Iron Mike, also known as Pioneer Mike, the larger fountain of the two already there. The statue dates back to the 1800s, and depicts a typical settler of the time, holding a rifle and shading his eyes to see into the distance.
