Considered to be the heart of modern Istanbul, Taksim Square is a broad, beautiful expanse where the central station of the Metro system is located. It is also the site of the monument celebrating Turkish independence. The square has become the center for some political protests in recent years; if there is a political gathering while you are visiting, you may want to avoid getting involved. While in the area, be sure to check out Istiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue), a nearby pedestrian street featuring boutiques, art galleries, cafes and nightclubs.
