Istanbul's Sacred Heart

Among Islam's most revered sites, the Eyüp Sultan Mosque stands on the site of Eyüp Sultan's tomb: The sultan, a contemporary and friend of the Prophet Muhammad's, is said to have been killed during the Arab siege of Constantinople in AD 668-669, and centuries later Mehmed the Conqueror directed the mosque to built over his burial. An earthquake toppled the original mosque, replaced by this version in about 1800. Eyüp Sultan's mausoleum, marked by exceptional painted tiles, serves as a major pilgrimage site.
