Bahamian Tradition

A favorite for tourists - particularly cruise ship passengers who have just arrived in Nassau - the Straw Market is one of the oldest organized markets in the country. With more than 500 vendors, this busy and colorful market contains a wide range of souvenirs, from tee shirts to hand-crafted jewelry.

It is the woven straw baskets and hats, of course, which most shoppers come to buy. At their best, these items are beautifully made and provide unique gifts to take back home to those who weren't fortunate enough to visit the islands. Don't be shy about haggling with the vendors; that's a tradition, too.
