Hidden Treasure

Located in Bangkok's Chinatown, Wat Traimit houses the world's largest gold seated Buddha statue. The Golden Buddha was once covered in plaster and colored glass to disguise its wealth and prevent it from being stolen, and over time the secret within was forgotten. It was regarded as an unremarkable (yet historically significant) statue until it was accidentally dropped in transit in 1954, cracking its plaster exterior and revealing the gorgeous gold foundation underneath. The plaster was painstakingly removed and the Golden Buddha, in all its glory, is now housed in Wat Traimit and is regarded as a beloved treasure.
