You're not going to see a shrine like this every day, it's safe to say. The Chao Mae Tuptim Shrine marks a place of offering for the namesake fertility deity, and it comes crowded with a wild array of carved and sculpted phalluses: the kind of sight that might very well provoke a double-take. These distinctive and multicolored effigies--some pretty impressively sized--are said to boost a visiting woman's chances of conceiving. And actually you may well run into smaller-scale phallus carvings elsewhere in Thailand, as the symbol is also taken to be a more general sort of good-luck charm.
