Royal Ruins

Even without delving much into the history, the architectural spectacle of Ayutthaya is breathtaking. This UNESCO World Heritage Site marks the second capital of the Kingdom of Siam: a longtime one, too, serving from the mid-1300s till its sacking by the Burmese in 1767. An easy daytrip from Bangkok, Ayutthaya may be a few centuries past the height of its glitzy glory--when it ranked among the biggest cities on the planet--but it still dazzles: soaring stone spires, the ruins of temples and palaces. It's easily one of Thailand's most impressive archaeological spreads.
