The Almudena Cathedral was built to bring the Catholic Church to Madrid. Built on top of Madrid’s first mosque, the Catedral de Nuestra Senora de la Almudena began construction in 1879 and was finally completed and inaugurated by Pope John Paul II in 1993. The cathedral has a Neo-Gothic interior with a Neo-Classical exterior. Inside you can take photographs of the frescoes, sculptures, and stained glass.
