Café Commercial opened in the 1880s, and is the oldest café in Madrid. You'll find a mix of traditional and modern, modeled after the intellectual cafes of Paris’ Left Bank, and decorated with leather chairs and polished dark wood detailing. This is one of the classic meeting places in Madrid, where Madrileños come to chat and people-watch. Locals say that the coffee is some of the best in the city; get a pastry or pan con tomate to accompany it. There are two levels, with the lower level being a more traditional coffee shop, and the second level a presentation space and night-time comedy club. Café Comercial also follows the Italian Sospesso tradition, where guests can pay in advance for a coffee for someone who doesn't have the means to buy one themselves. All in all, it's a warm cup of humanity.
