The ruins of a Roman temple in the midst of a modern city, the juxtaposition is poignant. Templo Romano is a reminder of just who built western civilization in the first place. You can see the six marble columns laid bare that once held the roof of this upstart pantheon. Actually, this temple honored a very particular set of gods, those who walked the earth and were Roman Emperors. Templo Romano was commissioned by Emperor Claudius then later finished by Domitian. There are those who would say that building a temple to oneself is hardly fair, a little like kissing yourself in the mirror.
