By the coast, in the old fisherman’s neighborhood of Barceloneta stands 20 stories of glass-the new headquarters for the Gas Natural Group. Although seemingly out of place, this building is a fitting addition to Barcelona’s unique skyline. The building is not just a typical vertical skyscraper, but morphs into a variety of shapes including the “bridge”, which cantilevers 138 ft out from halfway up the length of the tower, seemingly floating and defying gravity. Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue of EMBT created this building as a masterpiece of visual delight, but also as a vision for a sustainable future. The glass is covered in solar clear control glass with a low-emissive top layer. Added in 2005, this asymmetrical building of metamorphic measures is a feat for architecture.
