Santa Maria del Mar was built in the Catalan Gothic style during the period of Catalonia's dominance of trade through their control of the seas. The church was completed in 1383 and has since stood in the narrow streets of the old city section of Barcelona. Although the outside feels constricted by the nearby buildings, upon stepping into the church visitors enter an open area with high ceilings. The tall, beautiful windows let in a lot of light making the church feel even more open. Although not as ornate as some of the other churches in Barcelona, those who enjoy Gothic architecture cannot go wrong visiting Santa Maria del Mar and taking in its simple and unified design.
