A Fixture of Modernism

While many of us do not have the luxury of staying in this elegant four star hotel, The Hotel España has ornate and extravagant decor worth checking out. The Hotel España originally opened its doors in 1859 under the name Fonda de España, and was later renovated by the celebrated modernist architect Lluis Domènech i Montaner in the early twentieth century with the collaboration of Eusebi Arnau and Ramón Casas. The building was recognized by the city for having the “best establishment decorated in the artistic-ornamental style”, and has since been considered a architectural city gem. Check out the unique furnishings on the façade and in the lobby, then head outside and into Plaza Espanya, where there is a constant bustle of activity.
