Cementiri Sud-Oest, also known as Cementiri de Montjuïc, is the main cemetery of Barcelona that has taken over for the older Poblenou. The location was chosen as a way to keep it away from the boom in housing development that took place during the 19th century. Built into the hill of Montjuïc, the cemetery has winding pathways leading to different memorials and terraced areas that overlook the harbor. Some memorials included inside the cemetery include those dedicated to the International Brigades, soldiers of the Civil War, and victims of the Holocaust. Some of the more famous people buried here are Joan Miro and Lluis Companys.
