Africa's the birthplace of humankind, and more than a few of the most profound discoveries in archaeology have occurred in South Africa. What better place, then, for a showcase of the dramatic sweep of humanity's prehistory and heritage than Johannesburg, which offers just such a showcase in the aptly named Origins Centre. This fantastic museum, located on the campus of the University of the Witwatersrand, covers a "mere" 80,000 or so years of human evolution and culture. Along with hominid fossils and stone tools, the Origins Centre displays a wondrous array of South African rock art: the most ancient form of continuously practiced art in the world.
