Johannesburg is a sports-loving city, and one of its premier athletic shrines is the legendary Ellis Park Stadium. With a capacity of some 60,000, this is among South Africa's leading houses of rugby and soccer. Among the notable matches hosted here was the 1995 Rugby World Cup final, enshrined in the national consciousness given the triumph of the South African team, the Springboks. It was also the site for much of the action during the 2010 FIFA World Cup (which Spain won). Needless to say, catching an Emirates Lions or Golden Lions rugby match at Ellis Park Stadium is pretty darn invigorating, given the local pride and competitive spirit on full and raucous display.
