The Cradle of Humankind is a UNESCO World Heritage Site centered on the Sterkfontein Caves an hour northwest of Johannesburg. These limestone caverns and their surroundings have turned up some of the most significant hominid remains to date, including the world-famous Australopithecus skeletons of "Mrs. Ples" and "Little Foot." You can tour the caves, still an active archaeological site, and learn more about their significance and the story of human evolution in general in the museum displays at the Maropeng visitor center. Maropeng's quite the multipurpose facility, too, with onsite restaurants and conference facilities as well.
